Hensel Phelps SBE / DVBE Program

John K. Lopez Award

The Hensel Phelps/KMD Team supports the efforts of the State in maximizing Small Business (SBE) and Disabled Veteran Business Enterprises (DVBE) participation on the Project.  Like the State, the Hensel Phelps/KMD Team recognizes the valuable contributions made by SBE and DVBE firms to the economy and social fabric of California. This Project provides a unique opportunity to honor California veterans, not only by creating a state-of-the-art veterans home that responds to their unique needs and desires, but also by providing an opportunity to work side-by-side with California veterans during the design and construction of the project.

Vision

Hensel Phelps began as a small business in 1937 in Greeley, Colorado, and as an employee-owned company, they understand the needs and challenges encountered by small businesses today.  Hensel Phelps places a premium on its support for diversity and understands that the support of small businesses and disabled veterans businesses creates a healthy contracting environment.  Through its continual efforts to maximize small business participation on its projects, Hensel Phelps has historically maintained a leadership role in providing valuable assistance to small businesses in the communities in which they operate to help strengthen the local economy, create new business opportunities, and support best business practices that are vital to local communities.

Hensel Phelps has consistently demonstrated its commitment to the growth and development of California SBE and DVBE Businesses.  In April of 2001, Hensel Phelps received the prestigious “John K. Lopez Award” from the California Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise Alliance for its dedication to the inclusion of DVBE businesses on its construction projects.  Hensel Phelps remains the only contractor to have ever won this prestigious award. Earlier this year, Hensel Phelps was awarded the prestigious Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for Excellence by the Small Business Administration (SBA) in the Construction category. The Eisenhower Award, named after the president under whom the SBA was founded, honors large Federal contractors that exemplify small business utilization. As a recipient of the award, Hensel Phelps demonstrated a strong commitment to small businesses through contract utilization and effectiveness, mentoring and outreach events, and internal corporate policies and management support.

As further evidence of Hensel Phelps’ commitment to build the capacity of smaller businesses and thereby increase the potential of their long term success and profitability, an audit letter was received from the Small Business Administration recognizing Hensel Phelps’ small business commitment.  Hensel Phelps received the highest rating possible: OUTSTANDING.

Karen Klam, the SBA Commercial Market Representative who performed the audit, noted in her cover letter that she ‘...truly feels that Hensel Phelps’s rating is well deserved and that Hensel Phelps is one of the best construction companies in America’.

In order to build upon these past successes on the California Veterans Home-Fresno project, Hensel Phelps has developed a SBE/DVBE Utilization Plan that complies with the requirements identified in the Request for Proposals and guarantees that the Critical Success Factor for DVBE participation are achieved.  The plan, which will be finalized with input from the State, is built on the foundation of similar successful plans implemented on previous State of California projects.
